If somebody saved my life, how am going to 报恩? To be his slave until I die? I would rather not be saved. So 报恩 cannot be a valid principle.
I think there are fundamental difference between 报恩 and 感恩. 报恩 is reciprocal, which in our old Chinese fuzzy logic, was the argument for 孝. Whereas 感恩 is not necessarily reciprocal, and is more about universal unconditional love. Like the sun, it is free gift, but how are we going to 报恩 it? but you can 感恩, and follow its spirit to love people without expecting return.
报恩 vs 感恩
