PostPosted: Fri Dec 26, 2014 10:09 pm    Post subject: LAKERS -at- MAVS - 12-26-14 - Quick Thoughts and :-(( Ratings

Bricks & Boards… The Mavs pick and rolled the Lakers to death in this game. The Lakers strategy seemed to be…miss long shots, get the boards.

The Lakers outworked the Mavs 24-6 on the offensive glass. That saved them from their 36% shooting.

In the end, the Mavs strategy with the easier looks and 50% shooting won the day, 102-98.

It wasn’t quite that close. The Lakers pulled off a few late threes and a 36-point fourth quarter to get there.

Once again, Kobe sat and watched.

Hill --  -- Good to see him back with the double-double pace. He was clanking from the perimeter early and often offensively. The Lakers start off every game with our starters throwing up shot after shot from the perimeter and falling behind quickly as they miss. The Mavs meanwhile got all kinds of paint penetration and easy scores from that. What kept us in the game despite the Lakers poor shooting was our bigmen pounding the glass tonight. That was huge. The only reason the Lakers were even in striking distance. The Laker starting front court had 15 of the Lakers 24 offensive boards. Just killed it. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-13 shooting to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -11.

Davis --  -- Great job hitting the offensive glass and getting to the line as a result. His FG numbers are a little misleading because of that. It’s interesting watching the Mavs run the screen-roll over and over and setting up Chandler for dunks out of that. We can’t get the lob dunks to Ed with any consistency because of how we use our bigs and guards. The Stats:He scored 10 points on 1-6 shooting (8-10 from the line) to go with 11 boards (8 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -15.

Johnson --  -- He could not hit a thing. It was awful and the shots kept coming. He was irked with a lack of whistle, but it was a perimeter heavy game from him as usual. He did hit the offensive glass for 4 boards on that end and finished with a double-double, so it was nice to see him fill a stat sheet with other parts of the game. The team needs more of that from him. We had him covering the smaller guards quite a bit but the Laker team D had issues. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-14 shooting (2-5 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He had a +/- of 0.

Ellington --  -- Average game for him. He seems to be always good for about 12 points and one or two three’s. We had him try to run a little more two-man action tonight and he was a little sloppy on the execution. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-10 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -3.

Price --  -- Horrible shooting night from Wes and Ronnie. Amazing the Lakers were in striking distance with that and Nick struggling for most of the night. We’ve got to have more guys score more consistently. Price got his 7 points with a poor 1-6 shooting from three and virtually no playmaking from him. The Mavs killed us with the pick and roll all night. A lot of stopping that comes from the weakside help, not just the two guys dealing with the screen-roll. But we really needed to do a better job letting the Mavs PGs beat us with the jumper instead of getting into the lane with so much ease. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-9 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 6 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -1.

Young --  -- Eventually, he got on track late in the game, hitting a series of threes that nearly dug the Lakers out of the hole. It felt like once he got a good, wide open look where he wasn’t fading or creating, that he got it going. He was ticked with several no calls, some of them should have been trips to the FT line, yet he didn’t shoot a single FT on the night. He eventually got a tech after one of those. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-16 shooting (5-8 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +6.

Lin --   -- He did a pretty good job as floor general tonight. For a while there in the first half, it felt like this was his team and he was orchestrating everything. Hard to explain, but there was a comfort level out there. In the second half, he didn’t have quite that same comfort. He led the team with 7 assists, we just needed more points from him and the shot wasn’t falling. Defensively, a great job at times on the glass helping out the bigs and also recovering to block shots. He led the team with 3 blocks. That’s helping your front court. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -3.

Boozer --   -- He kept the Lakers in the game offensively. He was one of the few things working on that end of the court. His 18 points came in just 21 minutes. He also got in on the offensive glass, as well. The transition to the bench is really working well for him and possibly even increasing his market value. If he was worried about free agency, just embracing this role and continuing to bring it most nights against other team’s benches should translate well into dollars. Defensively, some awful moments. He had one player just dribble right around him and slam while his feet were nailed to the floor the whole time. He also had a bad breakdown in transition D not picking up a man who went right by him to take a pass and score a layup. Those plays drive you a little mad. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-16 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 1 steal and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +7.

Clarkson --  -- He had a couple fouls early in the fourth that helped get us in the penalty early. That’s why you’ve got to get him minutes, to suffer through some of those rookie whistles and get that out of his system. Offensively, he was slightly more aggressive. He did bank in a jumper straight away, which wasn’t very reassuring. He should watch some of the Mavs game tape on how they ran the two-man game. That’s what he needs more of…but unfortunately we purposely don’t do a lot of that. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -1.

Sacre --  -- His only score and the announcers said it was Boozer (they did correct it). Good job hitting the boards. He needs to do that with more consistency. He may improve his offensive game over the years, but the garbage work is something he needs to pick up from Madsen on the bench there. More of that would elevate his game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +1.

Scott --  -- Lakers were once again perimeter oriented and clanking early. Meanwhile, we have a bench of offensive players sitting and waiting… The Lakers pick and roll D struggled early on. Not great help. Scott would switch things up with frequency by going to the zone. That actually worked decently for most of the game… Not a good job at times making the guards beat them with the jumper… Late in the game, they lost track of Villanueva with some loose D, giving him 10 points to him in the fourth. Those threes hurt… The Lakers had a 24-6 advantage on the offensive glass. They shot just 36%...
