Chinese athlete Ye Shiwen deserves recognition and apology from western media

After a spectacular performance in the Olympic swimming pool in London, 16 year-old Chinese athlete Ye Shiwen received no recognition but overwhelming defamation and accusation from western media.  Such despicable defamation, based on no fact but pure conjecture, still continues even after many times of negative urine tests of Ye and the official public statement from the International Olympic Commission that she is clean.

What made me angry is that many reporters, columnists, and commentators who know little about swimming and Ye jump onto the conclusion that she must be doping because she can’t be faster than the US golden boy Ryan Lochte.

Let’s see the so called evidence against Ye:

First, she came out of the blue and “suddenly” improved her performance by 5 seconds.  Who made such claim obviously did not do necessary homework because this reporter may only pay attention to swimming once every four years, or intentionally left basic facts out of the picture.  Before this Olympic game, Ye is the world champion of the 200m individual medley having won the event at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, and placed 2nd in the 400m individual medley two years ago at the 2010 World Championships.  She is definitely not an "unknown" from out of "nowhere".  What's more, she improved her personal best by only 2 seconds in the heats of these Olympics from her 2010 time, and then improved it again by 3 seconds in the finals of the event.  So in two years, from when she was 14 to now when she is 16, she improved her time by 5 seconds.  How is that suspicious?  I would be surprised if she did not make significant improvement as a teenager become much taller and stronger during the two years, not mentioning how much hard training she went through.

Now let’s see what happened to other western swimmers.  Stephanie Rice, swimming in the same event, improved her time by 6 seconds right before the Beijing Olympics in 2008.  Of course no one has accused Rice of doping despite this.  Ruta Meilutyte, the new 100m breaststroke gold medalist, is given a completely free pass despite being only 15 years old, swimming over 2 seconds faster in the final than she ever has before the Olympics, and only being ranked 14th in the world in this event.  Not only that, this is her first major international competition.  Michael Phelps improved 4+ seconds in his 200m fly between 14-15 years old.  Ian Thorpe also had a similar performance improvement.  But they are all genius.  As to Ye, no, she must be doping!

Second, Ye, a 16 year old girl, swam faster than man’s 400m medley champion Ryan Lochte.  How is that possible?  The fact is Lochte is 23 second faster than Ye over the entire 400m course.  Ye only beat him in the final 50m freestyle split.  It is well-known that Lochte often goes all out in the beginning of races, and fades near the end.  Besides, freestyle is not in his strength.  Although he won the race but only ranked fifth in the final 50 meter split.  Ye, on the other hand, was trailing behind after the first 300m and relied on freestyle, her best leg, to win the game.  All the other four male swimmers who were faster than Lochte in the final 50m were also faster than Ye.  And by the way, what kind of magic drug can only strengthen the freestyle leg but not the other three legs?

And before we get into the fact there's no way a woman should be able to come close to man's time for a final leg of 50m.  May I present the following: Kate Ziegler set a World Record in the 1500m freestyle.  In the last 50m of her race she had a split of 29.27, which is only 0.17 second slower than Lochte’s final 50m.  This was after she swam for 1100m longer than Lochte!

If Ye’s performance is considered “unbelievable”, let’s examine other swimmers’ performance as well.  Michael Phelps, won 8 gold medals and broke 7 world records in Beijing Olympics.  To achieve that “unbelievable” goal he must have swam 20+ races in a week.  It is considered believable because he is a superman.  On the other hand, Sun yang, another Chinese swimming star who just won the 400m freestyle title, set the new world record of man’s 1500m freestyle in the 2011 World Championships, indicating he has outstanding strength reserve.  But after a 4x100m relay race yesterday, he almost collapsed at pool side.  He only attended two other races (400m and 200m freestyle) in this Olympics and won a gold and a sliver, and yet he has reached his limit—no compare to Phelps, right?

And now Missy Franklin, who was able to win a 100m final only 13 minutes after swimming an exhausting 200m freestyle semi-final, when the shortest rest period Michael Phelps got in Beijing was 30 minutes, is celebrated rather than have suspicions aroused, even though this feat is way more unusual and unheard of than Ye simply winning a race and breaking a world record.

According to many western journalists’ logic, based on these unbelievable performance, I can only draw one conclusion, which is, they are either alien or on drugs.  They all passed urine tests?  Well, they must have used advanced drugs that can’t be detected yet.  They are not innocent; their allegation just needs more time to be proven.  The above ridiculous attitude is exactly applied upon Ye right now by many western media.  After Ye won a second gold in 200m medley, an arrogant western reporter questioned her in the news conference, just like a lawyer questioning a suspect in court—you can only answer yes or no, have you been doping?—Wow, she was put on trial based on what grounds?

What happened to the western motto “innocent until proven guilty”?  She was questioned because Chinese swimmers had a history of drug use twenty years ago?  May I remind you that Jessica Hardy, a part of the bronze winning USA women's 4x100m freestyle team, was kicked off the US team for the Beijing Olympics for testing positive.  How about these shining names: Lance Armstrong, Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Marion Jones, and the list goes on.  May I remind you the history that the United States Olympic Committee covered failed drug test for Carl Lewis so that he could compete in Olympics?  It was also revealed that this committee covered up 114 positive tests between 1988 and 2000.  How about the notorious THG event in 2003 that involved more than 100 US sport stars?

It’s true that Chinese swimmers used performance enhancing drugs in 1990s, same as many countries during that time, but that history was long gone.  A little known (well, to westerners) fact is, China now has the most rigorous drug testing procedures for all its athletes.  If the athlete gets caught on drugs, the punishment is much more severe than here in US.  The fact is that of all the athletes that tested positive during the 2008 Beijing Olympics games, none, not single one of them were from China.  There were, however, athletes from the US, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Greece, Italy, North Korea, Vietnam, Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, Bahrain and Brazil, were caught for using drugs.

As to the ridiculous speculation that China must have been using some magic drug that cannot be detected using current testing methods, please remind me which country has more advanced technology in medicine and drug development, US or China?  Another fact is that Ye has been tested many times during this Olympics, even being tested at 2AM on the day that she had finals.  All tests came out negative.  Do all medalists in this Olympics enjoy the same “privilege” so that you will have the right to a deprived sleep?

I was once proud of western media as I naively believed that their reports are objective and unbiased.  Well, sadly not anymore.  The lack of professionalism, double standard, arrogance, ignorance, discrimination, and even racism, which were completely shown in this event, struck me like a hammer.

What a shame!

Sincerely,

BMSG
