Knicks said previously that they would match any offer. However, this new and real offer from Rockets might seriously mess up Knicks' cap situation.
That's what I read somewhere else:
On the 3rd year (2014-2015):
Stoudemire + Anthony + Chandler + Steve Novak > 63M, with Shumpert's salary (2.8M) team's option.
If they match Lin's contract, it will make a total of 78M for only 5 players. Luxury tax thresholds from 2008-2012 have been around 70-71M. Under the new CBA, standard tax for 10-15M over is $2.5 per one dollar over, and for 15-25M over it is $3.5 per one dollar over. If they match Lin's 15M on the 3rd year, they might have to pay 15M x 2.5 = 37.5M or even more if they go 15M over (at least 52.5M)
Are the Knicks willing to spit out 70 million on Lin alone in year 3? Or they will match for now, and then try to get some deal done in year 2 or 3, depends on the situation and player performance?
It's going to be tricky.
