There will always be poor people in a country no matter how well the country itself is doing. When NASA spent billions of dollars to send a couple of people to the moon, there were people in homeless shelters across America or in the subways of New York.

That aside, China does have a lot of problems. No one is denying that. However, this is neither the place nor time to discuss them. Those problems shouldn't keep us from cheering the phenomenal performance of our players, supporting their effort and sacrifice, and feeling inspired and moved.

In terms of the relationship between sports and national prestige, I can tell you this: the emigrant figure out of England DROPPED 11% the year after they aced the world cup in the 70's.

Using your example, should we wish the downfall of the privileged kid? Should we? Do you really love Chinese? Are you a Chinese?
