The difference is if you can't make that 18 footer consistently,

defenders will ignore you, and you lose the opportunity for offensive glass. Yao Ming's PnR was mainly pick, that's why it's not that effective, and wasts lots of energy of the big guy. Except with Tracy, he had a few roll in a game.
