D'Antoni deserves his credit, and he got it by

being awarded of the COY last year.

Unlike Suns without Amare this year, and people wrote them off, nobody wrote Dallas off for they didn't give Nash the max contract. It's because of their depth and talent level. Remember, Terry was proven a very talented good player, and so were Daniels and Josh Howard. Dampier did play very well in Clippers before he got his big contract from Cuban. They have Stackhouse coming off the bench, so nobody ever wrote them off.

But whether they are a better team, that remains to be seen. Better defensive stats and worse offensive stats doesn't prove anything. They are not a better team than 03' record wise either. They went to conference final that year, can they do that this year? I doubt.

As for Dirk having better stats, of course, he's still climbing, and yet to reach his peak. But one has to also remember, that Nash took him to the practice every single day, when he joined Dallas. Nash's help in Dirk's growth was recognized by Dirk himself and Cuban and Nelly. It's not a knock on Dirk's performance and hard working this year, just to state the obvious.
