All full frame cameras have their AF points crowded in the center (the AF mirror just cannot be made bigger).

As a result, for D3, if the subject stays in the center region, the 51 AF points will make its AF very nice and beats 1D3.

1D3 has its AF points spread out more. As a result, if the subject moves out of the center, 1D3 can track it better and beats D3.
