Even though on a Canon digital body, it's equal to 80mm, but because it's a cropped view, the distance is still the same as uncropped one, so it's perspective is not the same as a film camera shooting at 80mm ( the film 80mm will be further away to shoot at the same FOV )
but the main reason I don't recommend 50mm f1.8 for portrait is it's harsher out of focus area compared with an 85 f1.4 or even the 1.8 version.
