I like this lens so much. For me, 2.8 is big

enough. I usually use flash so 1.8, 2 and 2.8 makes no big difference for me. But without flash, when the light is dark, it makes difference. So You have to consider your shotting situation. The optical quality is quite good for this lens, but I don't have 100/2 and 85/1.8 and don't know the difference. I guess the difference is tiny, the shotting skill will be more important, such as good lightening, right exposure... . I saw so many pictures taken with much cheaper lenses by more skilled persons are far better than what I did with 100mm/2.8.

To my experience, the focal length of 100mm is ok for indoor portrait. It's best for shoulder-up portrait. I have 50mm/1.8 and it's best for half body portrait. I also have 70-200/ 4L and the tele-end is only good for head portrait if you shot indoor. Generally, to use 200mm for portrait, you have to stay 3-4 meters away from your object. Comparing to 85mm, it's a little bit long, but you can always step back a little to cover more area. But for shotting moving object(kids) indoor, maybe you don't have time to move back and forward, shorter focal length might be more preferable.

So It really depends on where you use and what you shot to choose which lens is best for you. For me,100mm/2.8 Macro is good for me to shot standing still kid indoor with flash and macro work with flash. I never tried 100mm/2.8 macro outdoor. One thing I have to say is the autofocusing is very slow so it's not suitable to shot moving object indoor or outdoor.
