I don't believe there are real "basic principles". Most great discoveries of
science came from questioning the presumed
"basic principles".
Richard Feyman used to say that when he
looked at the many life times of accumulated human knowledge in physics, he wondered may be it would take someone naive enough to make real discoveries.
I think it is perfectly fine to make stupid
mistakes in discussing problems here.
Real science forum make tons of stupid
mistakes, probably in a slightly disguised form.
Most problems in probability are not about knowing some magic formula or theory, but rather about clarifying what is exactly asked anyway.
don't blindly trust textbooks
