I think the formula is not that simple... actually when L > 1 the problem becomes ridiculously hard. Even for L = 1 the result is quite "new".

FYI the problem is called Ulam problem. You probably will not find it by using google directly because there are other problems titled "Ulam problem" as well and this is the less famous one.
