I am pretty sure parts of it were from Aristotle, whose work I read about a decade ago. But I don't remember him talking about why rich people are more likely than poor people to have immediate exposure to people who are a lot richer than themselves. I should go back to Artistotle, and maybe that would be a classy way to start a new research project for myself. :-)
