The natural tendency for human reproduction is to produce roughly the same number of male and female adults. There are more males at birth, but males also have high mortality when growing up. The two factors even out as both sexes reach adulthood.

Compared to monogamy, polygamy (1 hu*****and - multiple wives) actually hurts men because for the male sex, the benefit for some men to have multiple wives does not compensate for the loss for some others who have no women to marry. This is a simple economic logic based on marginal utility. So the conclusion is that: polygamy benefits the more powerful men, but hurts the male sex as a group.
