分形，新维度出现但代表性质量很少，为什么英国天生就是一个个人主义（资本主义）社会?

因为上海图书馆一次只能借五本书，我宁愿把《读库》放下也带了这本看起来比较枯燥的《英国个人主义的起源》回来，原因就是自己对东西方文化差异的研究有些兴趣。

这书确实枯燥。麦克法兰整本书就表达了一个意思，在关于英国农民社会到资本主义社会转变这个事上，马克思和韦伯的理论是错的。

既然是研究个人主义的起源，而个人主义又是资本主义的一个核心标志，那么研究个人主义在英国的起源可以从研究现代资本主义社会在英国的起源入手。关键就是找到原有的社会制度是什么时候转变为资本主义社会以及为什么转变的。而现有的主流理论（代表人物 马克思 韦伯）都认为英国资本主义是17，18世纪从农民社会发展而来的，17世纪之前的英国是一个完全的农民社会。

麦克法兰怀疑这个说法，他先给出标准农民社会的一些表征（这些表征对中国的读者用不着用文字复述，在2010年的今天到中西部的农村去转一圈，那就是麦克法兰的标准农民社会），然后用这些表征去对照英国史料，来追踪农民社会究竟是什么时候从英国消失的（即个人主义是什么时候出现的）

追踪的结果是，16-17世纪的英国不符合这些农民社会的表征，反而已有大量现代社会的表征。既然16-17世纪没有，那就再往前追，结果13-15世纪的英国也不符合，也和后面几个世纪没太大差别。再追，一直追到12世纪，居然还是一样！还想往前追但没法追了，因为再往前史料太少了。

这样一路追下来，结果居然是英国将近1000年中，社会模式其实并没有发生多大变化！现代资本主义的大部分核心特征早就在英国出现并一直存在着。英格兰体系从无法追忆的古代就已经自成一格。至于为什么会这样，为什么世界上其他地方没有产生和英国类似的社会，为什么独独是英国这个岛国，麦克法兰好像对这些不很关心，书的最后寥寥数语讨论一下，谈到的原因中有一个是英国的天气，但更多认为这就像生物进化中的基因突变一样，纯粹是偶然吧。

看来英国和中国到真是一组完美对照的国家。英国是西方最古老的资本主义国家，甚至从无法追忆的古代就已经有资本主义的传统了，而中国是最古老的农民国家，甚至在21世纪还保留着大量标准的农民社会特征（我们现在的户籍制度不还是以家庭为基本单位的么）

我最想知道答案的是：为什么？！为什么英国天生就是一个个人主义（资本主义）社会，为什么中国天生就是农民社会呢？难道真的只是偶然？

虽然我知道这很难有答案，但我至少知道把民主社会为何在西方而不是中国形成说是“因为中国是农耕社会而西方是商业社会”有多么的不靠谱和懒省事了。
