I am in CA. I moved in the house one year ago. The beginning of last month, I told the landlord I would move out this May 15, but he insisted I should pay to May 30 and then return my half month rent afterwards, yes, I did pay as he wished and told him that I would move out May 30 then. Now I have to stay in the house the end of June for a personal reason and give him one more month payment. When I notify him that, however, now he asks me to move out this May 15, says that since I gave him first notice that I would move by May 15 and I couldn't change it. I think it is pretty normal that tenants change moving-out day since nobody can plan everything that accuratly.
My question is that this landlord is obiviously against me here for the following reasons:
1.Before he asked me to share the plumbing fee once the plumber get clogged. I pointed out that was unfair to ask tenants assume all this fee since before we moved in, his family has been here for 10 years, and according to his own words, the plumber didn't get clean up for last 10 years. Upon that time, we just moved in for 8 months. This is a major reason he goes against me later on.
2.He asked me for SSN last month, and I refused since I almost to move out. He lied to me that all other tenants gave to him SSN, but I asked others, nobody said they gave SSN to him. For me it is unacceptable and kind of discrimination.
3.Recently I was very busy, and one night I boiled something on stove. I went back to upstairs when my laundry has been done and overestimated the water in spot, then this caused smooky in kitchen and smoke detector went off. My roomie called me and quickly I solve this problem without any damage to his house. I apologize this unconvenience and promise that won't happen anymore. My roomie told him about this, and now he use this excuse to let me out by May 15.
I actually paid rent to June 30, but he said you would gave back to me the money he owned to me if I move out May 15. For a personal reason, I really can not make this schedule. He threatens to evict me by law me and told me his brother is in law enforement department. And I heard from other tenants that actually he wants to let all of us out and have a family move in, he also notified other tenants to move out by June 15.

Do you think that he can lawfully does that to me by the above reasons? (I always pay my rent on time and didn't do any damage to his house) If he really start doing eviction, what I can do to protect myself?
