problems with Contractor, help needed thanks

Our home improvement contractor left with the uncompleted projects deed on the contract. He disappeared for more than one week and did not answer our phone call. Then we received a letter from him, asking for additional $5000, which is more than 50% higher than the contract price. Otherwise he will put a lien on our property within 10 days.

We signed two contract with him. The first one for $6500, he prepared, but excluding the painting job.(though he admitted it is included in the project verbally). The second one, we prepared for the price $9000. Basically the second one includes all the detailed job and says the $9000 is a fixed price. So far, we already paid him $8500. He keeps the key and moved our washer/dryer from the site to his warehouse.

What kind of legal action should we take right now?
