First, your injury caused your disability. Second, your employer shall offer reasonable accommodation to disability. If not, they are violation equal employment law. So I agree with your lawyer and don't think you'll have better advice here than that.
Second, you can request short term disability leave, your insurance company instead of your company will pay you (as a percentage of your salary). You can also request long term disability if you bought those insurance through payroll. Again, doctor's note is required. You can also get on FMLA, though nobody pays you except your company keeps your job for you.
Lastly, you want your company to terminate you instead of voluntarily quit.
