(i) have the tree pruned at your own expense or
(ii) leave it alone and sue your neighbor if the tree damages your property.

You cannot, however, have the tree pruned and get reimbursed from your neigbor.

As for adverse possession, it is irrevelant for now because it takes years before a court can award you with additional land. In the event you adversely possessed the land (and tree), then you will be responsable for any damages from the tree to your house and your neighbor's house.
