I bought some stocks before the dot?com bubble, but I no longer remember the exact purchase dates—or even the year—and I don’t have any paper records. The brokerage account has changed hands several times, and now I’ve discovered that the cost?basis information is incomplete or missing.
I contacted the brokerage, and they told me that they’re not required to keep cost?basis records for purchases made before 2011, so I’ll need to reconstruct the cost basis myself or set it to zero.
Has anyone dealt with this situation or have suggestions on how to handle it? Thanks.
