How does the goal light work in hockey?

The rotating red light is operated by an NHL off-ice official who is located somewhere near the goal for which he is responsible. There is an off-ice official for each goal. When he sees the puck enter the net, he presses the appropriate button on a handheld device and the red light turns on.
