请问关于long island

借这儿的人气问一下:
纽约long island的中北部靠近stony brook的什么地方比较好居住，我有两个孩子，一个在上小学，一个在preschool，马上要搬去。但是加州的朋友都在警告我“那边很危险，纽约！！”，我有些怕怕，根本不知该怎么办。麻烦这里的好兄弟姐妹们给些信息。
