No matter how good a program is, there will be good residents and bad residents in it. However, a chief resedent is almost always good. It is very prestigious to be one.

The chief resident is the only resident allowed to wear long white coat like an attending in many medical centers. All other residents and medical students can only wear short white coat. The chief resident makes rotation and vacation schedules for all the residents that can impact on their training great deal. A chief resident has the right to choose the best case for himself everyday and nobody can challenge him for being that way.

A chief resident is more likely to stay as a faculty in an academic center and become an academic doctor than other residents. They are very likely to take a leadership role in their future practice.

The chief resident is also involved in new resident selection, giving opinions from a resident’s prospective, taking them out for interview dinners. Attendings usually don’t go to these dinners with applicants. Our program usually interviews 100-120 applicants each year. Even though we had dinners with applicants in one of the best restaurants in the city, I got sick of it after going to the same place over a dozen times in two months period. I did try everything in its menu and got very good in wine selection. My biggest bill for one party of 8 or 9 was $1,850.00. My program director said "good job" after she heard it. I guessed she was pretty sure that I made every applicants happy that night.

As a chief resident, I have never been turn down a job I have interviewed.
