I don’t think your research experience is that important. At least from my personal experience.
In order to get an interview, your recommendation letter plays the important role, more important than your scores and CV. You have advantage working on a clinical trial and may know some clinical doctors. I would recommend you try to get along with some of those clinical doctors and ask them if you can do a clinical clerkship with them. You are not going to get paid to do this and may only be able to observe other than do any actual work. However, you will get the invaluable first hand experience to see the america medical system. More important than the experience, you need to impress the doctor in the mean time and get a good recommendation letter.
Don't be shy. Just ask them. most america doctors are willing to help someone with ambition.
When we select new residents, we never took anybody who doesn’t have a good letter no matter how high his or her scores in USMLEs were. We did take someone who had relative lower scores but had very good letters. A good letter from US MD is invaluable. The letters from you chinese professors usually don’t weigh much.
We look the personal statement second. We want to find those who totally commit themselves to medicine or certain subspecialty.
For FMGs, your communication skill is going to be a consideration. You better write everything in good English and don’t forget that you need ask those who write recommendation letters for you point out that there is no problem for you to communicate with other people.
Most programs don’t care too much about your research background because they only interested finding someone can cover their clinical work and won’t cause them too much trouble for. That’s why I think the clinical clerkship is going to help you the most because it gives the programs some confidence that you can function well in an US hospital.
The top programs, however, feel the responsibility to educate future educators for the country so that they do consider your research background in order to find a few residents who want to stay as academic physicians when they finish their training.
