if you can find connections from 9 or 10 years ago, but no one from 3 or 4 years ago.

If you do not want to use your direct boss as reference, you could try co-workers from 3 or 4 years ago. You could say I cannot find my direct boss any more, but a coworker from that period of time will be happy to be my reference.
