using the offer to bargain is not a good idea unless you are prepared to go when your condition is not met.

However, his situation is different. He seems to have a close relationship with his boss and seems well-accepted in the company. He's been there for five years. If another employer thinks he worths more, his company should recognize that.

Anyway, he needs to have a good judgment on how can bring this issue up without having it backfire him. He needs to negotiate tactfully.
