why they would not do that?
-- Once company decided a layoff, they will not change the plan unless they really need that person for short project which is good for the company (but not for the sike of that employee).

The situaton is that my friend already started looking and there is a highly possible positon. But the process won't be finished before the lay-off date.

-- Get a lay off, get a big $$. Then get a new offer.
-- Many people want this kind of situation, but hard to get it.
If the lay-off date can be extended a little, then he will not face the problem endangering the new job.
