They always look for fresh ph.d. graduate, which has a solid background in theory, and eager to resolve real life problem. The reason they prefer ph.D. is they want to use more advanced theory to re-fresh their product line, and existing staff has been away from research field too long to keep up the pace. Just pay attention to "Ph.D. preferred" job listing.

Btw, even though many jobs listed tons of skill requirements, no candidate can meet all of it. If you can meet 30%~40%, you should apply. Tell you a secret, in my company, the job listing has not been changed for years. Once the hiring manager was puzzled why no candidate applied has coding skill. Then he figured out the job listing did not match his requirement at all. I'm sure this happens all the time to other big companies. Give it time, you'll become an expert.

Another thing to realize, for people looking for job, interview is THE most important thing in their life, But to hiring manager, this is the least important thing. They can easily forget or postpone the interview. And 90% hiring managers only look at your resume 10 minutes before he sees you. So, you definitely have the advantage. Many hiring managers are so un-prepared, they are not sure what to ask. That's why luck is so important in job hunting. So, don't feel defeated why someone blow you off. It really has nothing to do with how you are.
