Develop an end-game picture, then negotiate

You seem to be looking for reasonable family life. In that case, your family can move to the A city 1800 miles away or the B city 500 miles away, or you can keep looking until you find a local job.

If your family can move, you need to consider which city is easier for your wife to find a job and better for the kids. You develop an acceptable end-game picture.

Then you negotiate. Talk to the B company and see if they can offer you a regular job, or the odds of converting it to a regular job. Once you get the best offer from B, you can negotiate with A for a regular job, too. The bottom line is that you want to use the opportunity to move toward the end-game picture you have in mind.
In the mean time, your wife may want to apply for jobs in A or B city.
