The keys are
1) to have a green light from your current boss.
In general, if you do not have his blessing, things could be complicated.

2) there are couple of ways to know the internal opennings.
you can check the HR website on your intrAnet,
you can chat with the other groups/department,
you can work small projects with other groups.

3) A common lesson learned is that
you'd better mend relationship with your boss.
