Like you said, there are hundreds payroll letters hanging out everywhere, it's very normal one get missing

I seriously doubt the HR will question you why your boss's payroll letter get missing.

If you really wants to be honest, tell the HR you spill a whole cup of coffee on his payroll letter so you want them to prepare a new one.
