q1: the second choice is more reasonable. and I have heard similar story befoer. the earlier candidate was not a good fit. thus other people were added and quickly hired.
q2: hard to say. since you are the only one ever talked with this director, you should have better feel than ayone who just got the information second-handedly. Go with your instinct, not too much analysis.
q3: I think they will still have you talk with COO and have an on-site. too early to tell the chance.
