You can ask directly when you see a good chance. Like "could you please share a little about your professional history"?

It is good to know their professional history so that you can better answer their questions and ask good questions.

It worked well based on my experience but it depends. I have seen some people who posted here that they are uncomfortable to share their professional experience to interviewees.
