我的解读是，你的行当要侧重知识面，而expertise 可弱些。其实，在工业界，integration skill 相当重要。 The key is to leverage others, put things together， and effectively execute projects.

Do not sell what I can or I like, try to sell and help what they need.
算法是个很narrow的area，too academic，you may leverage works of Universtiy Ph.D students，or Math professors.
Give some research to them, it will be much cheaper for you to develop them yourself.

3. Perception is the key. It is important to have people how to perceive you.
--- you need good communication skills, presentation skills, influnce people's perception
--- try to learn how to ask questions to impress others.
--- you need be a good team player, which may help win
your participation to other high profile projects.
--- no tasks are small tasks, treat all tasks seriously, present and document them well, and try to link them or to others.
