integrity in workplace [zt]

In the last two companies that I worked for, a fortune 100 company and a start-up beverage company, there have been issues with professional integrity. In both instances my bosses-a marketing executive at one company, and the CEO at the other-were fired for lying on their expense reports. There is a much uglier, legal term for what they did. But semantics aside, the end result is the same. They lost their jobs, and irreparably damaged their reputations.

Having professional integrity means more than just not committing a crime. The American Heritage Dictionary defines integrity as "steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code." In the workplace, this can be as simple as honoring your word.

Be Reliable
To quote a cliché, "do what you say and say what you do." Professional integrity involves getting the job done, when you promised, and how you promised. That doesn't mean that if you can't meet a deadline you're not acting with integrity. That's where the "say what you do" part of the cliché comes in. Speak up when you are unable to meet expectations. Letting your co-workers or boss know that you need help doesn't make you a failure. It opens dialogue and resets goals so that objectives can be met without stress and disappointments.

Running with Dogs - Gives You Fleas
The people you socialize with in the office reflect on you. Are you known as part of the group that takes long lunches, gossips at work or doesn't take their job seriously? Even if you are doing your job well, you may still be guilty by association. It is unfortunate, but your circle of friends can affect your ability to advance professionally. Associate with co-workers that share the same goals and ambitions as you do.

Keep Secrets
Keeping company secrets can be difficult, especially if you have friends in the office. But if your job makes you privy to private information, keeping this to yourself is imperative. Employee salaries, company profit, upcoming changes, and other hot topics will be as difficult for the next person to keep secret as it was for you. Do the right thing, and just keep it to yourself.

Telling Lies
Whether it's a little white lie, or the kind of lie that led to the firing of my old bosses, untruths have no place in the office. Anonymous Employee reports that 85 percent of managers are less likely to promote employees that they know have lied - even though 26 percent of those workplace lies are told in an attempt to please customers. Good intentions don't make a lie any less wrong. Besides, WebMD says that when we lie, our brains have to work up to 50 percent harder than when we tell the truth. Give your brain a rest and stick to the facts.
