You should do whatever is reasonable for yourself.

I had been the same situation before, the only different is my project was not my first one.

I always tried to finish everything on time. One of the project got involved too many unexpected things, and I just could not finish it on time. I worked all 12 hours a day and all the weekend, still not be able to finish. At that time, I was under very high pressure to a point that I could not stand. So I told my supervisor (similar as yours, not knowing anything I am doing) that I could not finish it on time, and communicate to my clients that there are so much to do, but too little time to finish. They all understood the situation, and I just continue doing whatever I need to do. They all forgot about deadline now because I kept communicating with all the progress I made. We are getting there, but not done yet. (two weeks past the original deadline).

Only want to tell you that communication is the key!!! We are all human beings, have our limitation. And things are always changing.
