我不是想讲什么网上吵架，或者媳妇跟婆婆关系的事情。

我是想讲一个我知道的一个朋友的自己的职业发展的事情。


他是国内医学院毕业的， 90 年代在日本拿了个 PhD （是生物医学方面的）后来美国做 post-doc。 很多人知道这种情况在美国以后主要有俩个出路， 一个是 post-doc 做完后去大学里做 faculty， 还有就是去工业界做 scientist。 不过这俩种 position 都是很不容易拿到的。 有一些 post-doc 就是年复一年的做下去， 当然可能 title 改了一下， 像什么 research associate， senior research associate， 或者有时候会给你一个不是 tenure track 的 research faculty 位置，但是工作压力蛮大的， 收入也不高。

就在他这样子半死不活的做着他的 post-doc 的时候， 有一些中国出来的医学院毕业生在美国渐渐的有人通过了 USMLE （原来是 ECFMG 专门为外国医学院毕业生弄的一个考试叫其他什么名字的， 后来就是跟美国医学院毕业生考这个同样的 USMLE） 考试， 进入美国住院医师 training program， 出来后就是有 license 的临床医生了。 他也在这种影下想走这条路。 我记得他是在 1999 年左右开始复习考试的 （因为那一年是我进入住院医师的一年， 我记得住）。 一般大多数人经过 2 年左右的复习考试能通过 USMLE Step I， 和 Step II （现在还有一个 CSA）， 但是他在经过好几次的 failure 后才在 2005 年左右通过了考试。 但是由于 score 比较低， 申请美国住院医师位置非常困难。 在俩年的不能 match 上以后， 他都已经几乎绝望了。 但是心里还是非常希望能在美国做医生， 也可以说是他的一个 dream 吧。

后来我们也没什么联系了， 最近有一次在跟另外一个朋友的电话中提起他来， 说是他后来在护士学校读了俩年书 （是那种医院里出钱为你付 tuition 让你去念护士学校， 毕业后要在这个医院工作若干年的那种情况）， 现在在一个 hemodialysis 中心做护士， 工作不是很忙，收入比他做 post-doc 时候高了很多， 那里的医生也非常喜欢他。 现在他的精神状态非常好， 跟以前他在 match 不上后的极度低落的情况简直是判碌俩人。

以前他对做护士是很不以为然的， 就是非要做医生不可。 但是退一步后， 现在他也是对自己的这个最终选择是很满意的。 因为工作后， 他非常 happy。 实际上是这样的， 一个人不是非得要做什么， 或者达到一个什么状况， 只要你脚踏实地， 有一个平和的心态， 你就可以开开心心的过一辈子。


退一步在很多的情况下是可以海阔天空的！
