It is not un-common.
I have a team member from India. He recently took a personal trip back to India. The day before he and his family took off, I asked him if it is possible to extend his trip for one week and spend that one week to visit our off shore development center. He agreed. Then I asked my boss what we can do to compensate the team member. My boss said the company will pay his trip from his hometown to the off shore center, the hotel and food when he stayed at the off shore center. That is. I specifically asked if we can re-imberse the flight between US and India. The answer is no.
