Good plan and it seems that you learnt something already.

Be nice, positive and professional to your managers when you have dinner/lunch with them individually. Don't take anything seriously about the personal relationship from your big manager unless he SAYS it directly.

Sometimes, American like joking around and it also depend your individual interpretation. It might cost your job if you are not careful enough to deal with the relationship at work.

Remember silence is golden. Be positive if you have to say anything given your bad review score.
