在会计这个领域里， 从大的方向来说就是两种：private and public.(regardless of governmental and nonprofit accounting). Private accounting and public accounting的区别，打个简单的比喻，我个人认为，其实就是公共英语和专业英语的区别。

一般， 作 A/R, A/P, G/L, controller, CFO,等基本上是在private /industry accounting领域。 从专业上来说，这类工作很多是punch那些简单的数字，特别是A/R, A/P, G/L 工作内容比较单一枯燥且重复， 好像学的东西也不是很多（注意我这里没有从communication skill, etc上定论）。

Public accounting实际上是指会计事务所（CPA firm)的工作性质。一般来说，会计事务所的业务比较广泛。它的工作范围可以是税务（个人／公司／退休／trust/estate/gift taxes), 审计, assessment（internal control, minimum standard compliance etc）， Review/compilation, IRS representation, Retirement planning, Selling & buying business, Management advisory,个人财富管理，等等等等等等等等。

so,在会计事务所的一个好的会计师做到最后实际上是一个高级的consultant.他的工作在某种成度上就如 a lawyer：处理一个一个CASE.为了把CASE处理成功，有时要作很多的research.这就是为什么每个会计事务所都购买了online electronic library.所以， 会计事务所的工作其实是很有趣的, 有时还很有挑战的，特别是遇到一些边缘问题，经过你的努力解决时，非常有成就感， 知识面无形中也扩展了很多。一般人说的“会计越老越值钱“实际上就是指会计事务所的这类会计。在美国，经过这类人签字的document是非常被信耐的。 所以，自从入行以来，我是觉得我有很多东西要学，从来不小瞧会计， 特别是会计事务所的CPA。

虽然行业的工资水平有高低，其实从事任何职业，你的地位的高低，挣钱多少最终是看你的能力，知识plus你的野心。 你说，这里的作了很多年IT的，有多少人挣的比我们firm的才30's刚提升为partner的那个young girl多呢？

因为会计事务所的会计接触的内容广，很多业务方面得到了充分的锻炼，业务经历丰富，这就是为什么很多industry/公司在招controller, CFO时,加了public accounting firm experience preferred.

所以从事任何职业，无论工资水平起点高还是低， 只要你作个有心人，你都可以有机会作个“人上之人”.
