It sounds terrible, but in fact this happens everywhere! I got my current job at the hope that my boss will help me fit in, but he suddenly left after I started. I am the only one here to support a big production system without the tech skills it requires, and do not know much about anything.
At the first few months, my life was terrible, worried every day. No documentation, no one to ask, no training plan(they really want to send me to training, but no money due to the budget cut).
It has been 6 months now, and I survived. I never worked this hard, almost 12 hours every day. Read many books, search on the Google(by the way, Google is my best helper). Things are getting much better now. I finally feel like I am the master of this system.
Do not worry too much! I truly understand the frustration you got, but just do your best and you will be fine.
It is a hard way, but I think that I learned a lot this way.
