it doesn't hurt. the worst is they still don't think you are qualified, but they would really appreciate your interest. you never know, if they still can't hire anyone in a reasonable timeframe, they will grab someone who is still interested and wait in the line. just show them that you are fast learner, and really like to work with the team, and even ask them how you can improve your qualification, maybe taking a short course to get your knowledge/skills updated? good luck!
