does your company provide any kind of training on management/leadership skills? you should ask your boss about all kind of training opportunity.
if you are serious about developing into a good leader/manager, you do need to know what best works for your people, not what you like best. maybe even have a meeting with your boss, who seems to get popularity among your reports, show your admiration for her and willingness to work with her (not against her) and build a strong team.
good luck!
you have a long way to go buddy.
