not really laid off

Dear XDJM,
I'm working for a small company which isn’t going well? My boss let me taking vacation without pay, but don’t want laid off me. He said he will call me back when there’s money in account. He doesn’t know how long we will wait.

What should I do? I prefer to be laid off, and get EI. When the money comes, I go back to work. How to talk with my boss? Thanks.
