WXC 职坛 One-Act Play: Romeo & Juliet

PROLOGUE
Several WXC 职坛 residents, all with a sense of humor
In North America, where we set our one-act play
From mundane chitchats spring more serious philosophical discussions
Where friendship leads semi-dirty minds to harmless flirting
From these seemingly trivial undertakings
A pair of cyberspace lovers, far from star-cross'd, share many a good healthy laugh

What here shall miss, no toil of any kind shall succeed to mend


SCENE I. WXC 职坛. A public room.

Enter XIYUFEIYING (FEIYING), HANNAH, 123..., HENRYLI, BUYIZHICAI, of the house of MEIGUOLAOTU (LAOTU, “CHAIRMAN”), armed with semi-dirty minds and sharp-tongued words

FEIYING
O, help me! I am so doomed! And it is all Brother Hu’s fault!

HANNAH
Calm down, you silly girl; pray tell us what happened.

FEIYING
I am positively doomed! Following Brother Hu's advice, I joined this club called Toastmaster International, and see what I bargained myself into, all unwittingly. You are not going to believe me, but I am to play Juliet in a modern-day make-believe play of Romeo and Juliet!

HANNAH
Bravo! We surely have some merrymaking coming our way! You go, Juliet!

123...
Make haste, book Aotu a flight to come over to play Romeo!

FEIYING
You scoundrels! I am begging for help!

HENRYLI
Before you call all of us nicer names, may I please ask what this Toastmaster thingy is?

BUYIZHICAI
Toastmaster, doc, is someone who makes plenty of toasts yet never turns out a single slice of edible bread for others. Now, you are duly enlightened.

HENRYLI
He eats the toasts all by himself? Or is he just so clumsy that he burns them all?

FEIYING
I cannot imagine that you have never heard of TI, Toastmaster International! It is a club one joins to polish public speaking skills.

HENRYLI
Ah, that! It certainly sounds interesting; I think you should go for it. Is not playing Romeo opposite Aotu something you have always wanted to do?

FEIYING
You are no more serious than the rest of the gang!

123...
Wait, I don’t know about the others, but I am deadly serious!

HANNAH
Look, what do you all think about this plot? Two soul mates, one living in the Southern Hemisphere and the other half the world away, both contentedly thriving in their professional careers, could manage to meet only in the cyberspace. This needs to be further threshed out, of course. But first, you might want to have a word with your hu*****and.

FEIYING
That may not be a bad start! But how do you close it all? I mean, how does Juliet die, and why?

HANNAH
That is easy! Juliet was having a great time enjoying one of her XXX-rated video rendezvous with Romeo, but her computer just could not take the punishing heat anymore, and exploded, resulting in Juliet’s tragic but painless death. In fact, she was yelling “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” on her final exit....By the way, when is the due date?

123...
Due date? I reckon that would be approximately 10 months after the lovers meet, but I am hardly the master of this monkey business, so please don’t quote me.

FEIYING
Thank you all for nothing! While I am suffering, all you care about is having fun at my expense. Just the same, we shall convene again and talk more about this. Chickening out has never been a play in my book, and I am not going to start a new chapter heading in the wrong direction.

HANNAH
Hurrah! Let the real fun begin, sooner rather than later!

SCENE II. WXC 职坛. A pubic room.

Enter HUSHUOZHI, 123..., TAIZHOU, MDQ100, BUYIZHICAI, TCMQUACK, JIUMAJIA

HUSHUOZHI
What the is going on! I left for but two minutes! And while I was gone in those two damn minutes, I became the scapegoat for whatever mess Feiying got herself into. For heaven’s sake, I don’t even know what royal mess she got herself into this time!

TAIZHOU
Cool it, cool it, Brother Hu! If I were you, I would wear the blame as a badge of honor!

HUSHUOZHI
You womanizing bastard, what an automaton ass-kisser!

123...
Mind your language, Bro – there is a lady here.

JIUMAJIA
That is okay, 123... I have long since gotten used to Brother Hu’s creative use of the English language.

123...
Besides, TAIZHOU may be a mighty fine ass-kisser, but he certainly is not a bastard. I was there when his birth certificate was signed by Dr. Henryli with his $850 limited edition Parker. The official paperwork stated in no unclear language who his biological parents are.

HUSHUOZHI
What do I care about who his biological parents are, as long as he is not after me for child support? With the inflation we have seeing of late, I can barely manage to get by at my lowly salary of $260K per annum.

MDQ100
$280K a year! Think of that! I have been busting my rears off for years just to get to $160K a year? Man, I have been cheated! No, I have been robbed!

BUYIZHICAI
Stop crying foul, you ungrateful, greedy pigs! I am just as much of a talent as the rest of you are, but I have never complained about my low six-figure base salary.

MDQ100
You shut up, you smart ass! If I had been granted hundreds of thousands of shares in stock options potentially worthy many millions in a few short years, I would have kept my mouth shut, too.

TCMQUACK
You guys make me want to, to borrow a saying from Aotu, “kill myself by cracking my head against a piece of toufu.”

Enter AOTU, FEIYING

AOTU
What is the matter, quackie? Your snake oil finally got somebody killed, and now you have a lawsuit in your hands? Don’t despair yet. I am sure that something can still be worked out to spare your life.

123...
You loved birds could not have come one minute too soon. Brother Hu wants to settle scores with you, Feiying.

FEIYING
Bring it on, Brother Hu! I have been looking for you up and down myself.

HUSHUOZHI
If you would indulge me, your highness, please tell me what your humble servant could have possibly done to deserve the pleasure of incurring your displeasure?

FEIYING
Did not you, barely 48 hours ago, push me to join this club called Toastmaster International?

HUSHUOZHI
That, I did, if you insist calling my gentle nudge pushing. Guilty as charged.
Now, what could be wrong with you having a fabulous opportunity to improve your pubic speaking skills?

FEIYING
You foul-mouthed rascal! Public speaking skills, not pubic speaking skills!

HUSHUOZHI
What is the difference? From what I know, every little chat worth having, public or private, involves something public one way or another.

As always, Brother Hu speaks nothing but the truth.

AOTU
I don’t disagree with you on that.

HUSHUOZHI
Splendid! Now, kangaroo – oops, I mean Aotu – I don’t care how tight you and Feiying are in pubic – I am sorry, I mean in private. That’s strictly your business, and your business alone. But you’d better be on my side on this: I did nothing wrong in pushing Feiying to improve her pubic speaking skills.

AOTU
I am on your side, of course.

FEIYING
Public speaking skills!

BUYIZHICAI
Not that Feiying is not already great with her pubic speaking skills.

TAIZHOU
She is very good, indeed.

FEIYING
Public speaking skills, please!

BUYIZHICAI
I apologize. I slipped.

FEIYING
Stop! No more digression! I need you guys to help me figure out a way to get out of this mess, now!

MDQ100
I heard that HANNAH the caretaker had already come up with something.

AOTU
So did I, and that is why I am here – to help deliver Feiying from her misery.

Wrong! To send Feiying to her bliss.

TCMQUACK
With some help from my herb-based concoctions, that could be easily arranged.

Do your aphrodisiacs really work, doc? My missus has been complaining about my sagging prowess lately, and I am seriously thinking about doing something about it.

MDQ100
Quackery or not, I am no fan of traditional Chinese medicine, and I will never waste my hard-earned greenbacks on some never-proven exotic concoction. Viagra works just fine for me.

JIUMAJIA
Sad to say, the little blue once-magic pill does not do much of anything for my hu*****and any more.

MDQ100
Your hu*****and, and you, for that matter, should have known better not to do 2 pills a day, 7 days a week, when the pharmaceutical godsend first came out. Double down might have worked well for you both at card games, but summoning jimmy is a totally different matter. Your collective shortsighted over-indulgence, I am afraid, did irreparable damage to the most valuable asset of your otherwise made-in-heaven merger.

HUSHUOZHI
I offer my condolence.

TCMQUACK
Here is my card, miss. Feel free to give me a call whenever you and your beloved are ready to try something different.

JIUMAJIA
Thank you, quack. But we are not that desperate yet. With his lifelong training as a handy man, with little encouragement needed, he can still turn out a pretty hand job now and then.

FEIYING
You have my sincere sympathy, Jiajia. Now, can we get back with Hannah’s plot, and flesh it out a bit?

AOTU
Let’s get on with it. After we have a decent draft worked out, we will head out to a watering joint and have a cold pint.

You cannot get off the hook that easy, Aotu! This is a big favor you and Feiying are asking of us – we all deserve no less than a blown-out treat of your world-famous corruption initiation rite (fubaiyixia).

AOTU
That, too, can be arranged.

SCENE III. WXC 职坛. A quasi-pubic room.

Enter LONGSHAOYE

LONGSHAOYE
Where is everyone? It is almost 7 AM, and I am the only one holding the fort here? That just does not seem right.

LONGSHAOYE
Maybe the usual groupies pulled another all-nighter last night? While I wait for them to show up, I might as well take a stroll. (Start to sing) “It is a beautiful day/Perfect for pursuing my gourmand’s way...”

ENTER SIGMA

SIGMA
Morning, Longshao! Look what I found next door?

LONGSHAOYE
Used condoms? Or is it another tube of virginal lubricant? I cannot be surprised by anything these days.

SIGMA
Better. It is a tape recording.

LONGSHAOYE
Audio or video? Anything interesting on it? Or is it just talk?

Enter COLDFUSION, in revealing skorts, and holding a portfolio in her hand

SIGMA
It is audio. You should take a listen before you judge.

COLDFUSION
Excuse me, but is this the room where Meiguolaotu interviews candidates for his vacant secretary position?

LONGSHAOYE
I did not know the Chairman of the Board has a vacant secretary position. He certainly did not advertise it. You kids play by yourselves; I am taking a walk. (Longshaoye saunters off, continuing to sing) “A very beautiful day indeed/A couple of nice dishes are in need....”

COLDFUSION
I did not mean to intrude, but I am curious about the tape recording you just mentioned, Mr. ...?

SIGMA
I am Sigma. Folks call me Si-si around here.

COLDFUSION
Si-si, what a lovely name! Maybe I should explain why I was asking about the tape recording: I sent a song I recorded myself to the Laotu just yesterday, but upon reflection, I am now kind of embarrassed by my spur-of-the-moment action, and wish to take it back.

ENTER QIUXIANG, wearing a cheerful if somewhat tired look

SIGMA
You must be Coldfusion, then. We all heard your sweet, beautiful voice, and are duly impressed.

QIUXIANG
Did I interrupt anything? I am sorry if I did.

COLDFUSION
No, no, of course not.

Enter WHARTONMBA, in his usual tailor-made three-piece suit

SIGMA
Miss, are you here to interview for the Chairman’s secretary position, too?

QIUXIANG
No, really. My name is Qiuxiang, and I am new from the UK. So the Chairman’s business is growing even in the on-going economic downturn that he needs additional hands?

SIGMA
The Chairman’s business is recession-proof, and he can use extra staffing anytime.

COLDFUSION
That is why I am here – after what I have been through, I want to get into something as recession-proof as possible.

WHARTONMBA
What will the Chairman pay for a high-profile administrator these days? Not that I am in the market for a job, but it does not hurt to keeps one’s eyes open.

SIGMA
That will be a question for Hannah, the Chairman’s all-time favorite secretary.

QIUXIANG
The Chairman constantly talks about ERP, SAP, IT, Database. What business is he in? Nothing remotely shady, I hope?

SIGMA
I like to nose around here and there, but I am not an auditor.

COLDFUSION
You are kidding, right, Whartonmba? Not that I have doubts about the Laotu’s business’s appeal, but with your Wharton degree, you just cannot be serious when you implied you might be open to working for him as an administrator.

WHARTONMBA
Why not? I recognize only dollar signs. The rest is nothing but noise, static.

COLDFUSION
Are all MBA’s so practical? MDQ100, looks at money the same way as you do.

WHARTONMBA
You may say that birds of a feather flock together.

Enter GAOZHIDU, WAITGC, FANFAN88, GRANDLAND, INTERNUTS

SIGMA
Speaking of birds of a feather, there come five birds of a feather: the brain trust in the Chairman’s kingdom. Before their collective brain power steams up this room, I’d better open the windows a little wider.

FANFAN88
We came directly from the street after running into Longshaoye. Where is the tape you picked up, Si-si?

SIGMA
I was just about to play the tape for Longshaoye, but he was more interested in taking his daily stroll. Now, consider this a warning: What is on the tape may be a bit off-color to the more sensitive ears.

FANFAN88
Save your warning for the Chairman himself, if he ever gets of wind of it.

Sigma starts to play the tape

Enter Chuanyunjian

CHUANYUNJIAN
Who is that guy lecturing Jiujiu for indulging in Viagra on the tape?

SIGMA
Why? He is MAQ100? I do think you two have run into each other before, if not formally introduced.

CHUANYUNJIAN
The self-styled know-it-all MBA from some ing B-school? Who does he think he is? His might know something about the boardroom, but that does not mean he is equally competent in the bedroom. Give me a break!

QIUXIANG
Not that I am of the prudish sort, but some of the gentlemen’s remarks are somewhat jarring.

FANFAN88
How come Mr. Yin Tang’s scandalous flirting remarks were not jarring to your ears when you were at the receiving end?

QIUXIANG
They were. You only need to know what a lesson I taught him after he and I wed. You have not since heard of another light-hearted beep coming out of my hu*****and’s mouth, have you?

GAOZHIDU
You are some woman! I wish I had the same power to wrap my hu*****and around my little finger.

WAITGC
Some woman to avoid, if I may say.

GRANDLAND
Let us hear about it, sister GC. Please go on.

WAITGC
What is there to go on? Don’t you see that Qiuxiang had her time, but now we live in the 21st century?

INTERNUTS
One never wins an argument against GC. You may as well save your breath, Grand.

COLDFUSION
I like this sister. You have to tell me more about her later, Nuts.

GAOZHIDU
To each her own.

INTERNUTS
That sums it up. On the one hand, you have Qiuxiang, who in her prime was a first-class flirt herself yet managed to tame a playboy of Mr. Yin Tang’s caliber; on the other hand....

FANFAN88
You are such a professional consultant, an even-keeled two-handed analist! You certainly picked the right name to suit yourself. I will tell you what I am going to do next: I am going to convert the tape into a sound file and post it on WXC 职坛.

SIGMA
You will do no such thing, Fanfan! Certainly not without first asking for the Chairman’s permission.

GAOZHIDU
It probably will be okay with the Chairman, Si-si. If anyone can claim to know him, I think I can. I have known him since his wilder days.

SIGMA
If you say that, Gaogao.

COLDFUSION
Ms. Gao, you are truly a sage. May I send you email in private afterwards?

SIGMA
Just like that, Gaogao earns herself another admirer.

WAITGC
I have always been my own favorite admirer.

GAOZHIDU
I have long been an admirer of many a character here who pay homage to the Chairman. I admire Hannah for her wisdom, her well-rounded knowledge of worldly affairs, and her tireless efforts to help others. I admire Aotu for his intelligence, and for his deep-rooted sense of humor and humility. I admire Feiying for her single-minded determination to follow her dreams and ideals, and for her courage to openly declare her biased or unbiased opinion, as the occasion merits. After the Chairman himself, these are the true mainstays of this place.

FANFAN88
No one is going to argue with you on that, Gaogao. Where are these heavy-lifters? I will bet for a blue moon rather than for all four of them to be no-shows.

SIGMA
The Chairman is always everywhere and nowhere. He is often invisible yet sees everything that happens in his kingdom. I need not ask where Feiying and Aotu are – they have better things to do than wasting time arguing whom to or not to admire; they only need to have each other to admire. As for Hannah, she is probably slaving away for her bosom buddy polishing up her latest labor of love, Romeo and Juliet.

SCENE IV. WXC 职坛. A private room.

Enter FEIYING, AOTU, chatting and holding hands

FEIYING
Here we are. We are all by ourselves, the two of us.

AOTU
Yes, we are.

FEIYING
Sometimes I wonder why I am particularly attracted to you.

AOTU
I do the same thing from time to time, often in the middle of doing something on the job.

FEIYING
That is not a good habit to get into, though. It may give you trouble in the long run.

AOTU
Not that I don’t know. But then, it is neither something you can do much about.

FEIYING
I know what you mean. Well, maybe, just maybe, we can indulge ourselves a little, for now at least. I know you are man enough to call it quits when it is the right thing to do to call it quits.

AOTU
You seem to know me better than I do myself. But you are right: We do no harm to each other by being friendly to each other.

FEIYING
That is certainly true. I feel you are just the older brother I have always wanted to have but have never had.

AOTU
Your hu*****and does not seem to think that way, though. I heard that you almost got into trouble at home for spending too much time on WXC 职坛.

FEIYING
Some say I am addicted to WXC 职坛. Maybe I am.

AOTU
There is nothing wrong with spending some time with friends, in the real world or in cyberspace. That is what friends are for, isn’t it?

FEIYING
What are friends for?

AOTU
To support one another, and have fun with one another.

FEIYING
You certainly have supported me since I met you on WXC 职坛. And have I not been having fun with you!

AOTU
I know I have.

FEIYING
You know what, Aotu? I am just glad that we are good friends the way we are.

AOTU
How do you mean?

FEIYING
I mean, unlike some of our lesser friends think, our friendship will never lead us astray.

AOTU
You are just that sure of yourself! I have had my own doubts.

FEIYING
Really? Such as?

AOTU
Like when 123... suggested that, had we met each other before you met your hu*****and, things might have turned out differently.

FEIYING
That is purely a hypothetical question.

AOTU
Hypothetical questions are the ones that test one’s true character. Reality is only one set of many possibilities things could have turned out.

FEIYING
For the heck of it, let us follow up on some of the hypothetical questions.

AOTU
I am never the one to object a good idea.

[XXX words deleted here]

FEIYING
Yeah! Yeah! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!

Feiying starting to faint, ending up collapsing on the floor in front of her smoke-spewing computer

Exit Aotu, yelling“Help! Help!”


SCENE V. WXC 职坛. A public room.

Enter HANNAH, HUSHUOZHI, LONGSHAOYE, GAOZHIDU, WAITGC, FEIYING, AOTU

HANNAH
What a play! And to think that I had a hand in bringing it all about!

HUSHUOZHI
For the record, I did not like it a bit! Now that the curtain has come down, let’s move on.

LONGSHAOYE
Also for the record, I enjoyed it tremendously. And I cannot wait for a sequel.

GAOZHIDU
As a rule, I don’t hold back comments on things that have happened on WXC 职坛. On this one, though, I wish to pass. Instead, I would like to pose two questions. One, what does the Chairman truly think of the play? And two, how did Feiying’s hu*****and react?

WAITGC
It does not matter what the one thinks or how the other reacts. It is only a play, for god’s sake.

GAOZHIDU
You are probably right on that one, GC. Still, curiosity got the better of me.

HANNAH
I can answer Gaogao’s first question. I was with my boss right after the actors and the actresses took the last bow, and this is what he said to me: “If you see something extra in your next paycheck, I want to assure you that it is not an accounting error.” Any more needs to be said?

FEIYING
And I can answer Gaogao’s second question. I will simply let this post-play fact speak for itself: After the play, my hubby, Aotu, and I went out for a real corruption initiation rite (fubaiyixia), and we had a ball in every sense of the word!

AOTU
Corruption is good! We all should have more, not less, of it.

LONGSHAOYE
That really was not a post-play thing, then. It was foreplay.

HUSHUOZHI
How come I wasn’t invited? Regardless what I think of the end result, don’t I deserve some credit for getting this much-ado-for-nothing rolling to begin with?

FEIYING
You do, for nudging me to take on opportunity to improve my pubic speaking skills.

HUSHUOZHI
We all can see that you passed the test in flying colors. Congratulations are clearly in order.

AOTU
I may add, Feiying’s hu*****and is a true sport. One cannot ask for a more understanding buddy anywhere.

GAOZHIDU
It is easy for you to say. Why didn’t you two bring him along?

FEIYING
After the shots he downed, he is not going to wake up for another 12 hours.

AOTU
I am no match of his when it comes to drinking. Not even close. I finally lost count of the shots he was able to gulp down and still manage to be on his own two feet when we walked out.

HANNAH
Yet, you are here to talk about it, and he is not.

AOTU
Trust me, he was the last one left standing.

WAITGC
On that, the jury is still out.

EPILOGUE

A charming cheerfulness this morning with it brings
The sun, for good measure, is poised to poke through the clouds
Do indulge yourselves, friends, and engage in more bantering
Some may be racy, others off-color, still others light-hearted
For never is there a place more relaxing
