I like James, too. Here are some of the my thoughts:
1) I believe in one episode, James mentioned he is from Korea. Not sure if the current situation in VT plays any roles, but he seemed to be a bit of holding back, not like the James we saw in the previous episodes. I didn't feel he was fighting very hard.
2) In the video about James, it was showing his two little girls. Nice and sweet, but, I don't think it was a wise choice. Think about it, working for Trump, overseeing his big projects, that means working a lot of hours, can James handle that? On the other hand, Stephanie didn't seem to have this kind of 'burden'
3) Stephanie's background suits what Trump is looking for better.
4) James shined more and more towards the end of the interview process, but he did give the impression of detail oriented, i.e. not able to see the big picture.
5) Between the two, I didn't like Stephanie for the reason that she seems to be the type of person who always goes with the flow (maybe that's why she can stay afloat :-)), so the question about whether she can work individually makes sense.
Anyway, I did feel bad that James didn't make it.
