Ave age for top MBA full time program is only 27-28. I had GMAT 760 and MS from top 10 engineer school and applied to a few top MBA when I was only 30 and didn't get admission. They look for leadership, not scores. You don't need to have business experience, you can be an engineering manager/lead and showed leadership.
Change career completely from tech to good non-tech jobs (investment banking, trading, or management consulting at Wall St is impossible at age 40 even with a top MBA. These are sweat shop jobs and they want young energetic people. You might be able to get interesting technical financial jobs, like quant jobs at hedge funds, but no need for MBA at all.
But your best career boost is probably stay in the valley and move into management track, again MBA doesn't help. You probably see the engineering management mostly don't have MBAs.
MBA not helping much
