got a phone interview from the HR with a top IT company.
When it came to the question about salary expection, the HR person directly asked: what is your current compensation? Keeping in mind what I learned from this forum, I tried to shun the question and said: I am open with compensation. What is the pay range for this position?. Then the HR person spoke out the range. I said that meets my expectation. But the HR still persisted in asking again :what is your current compensation? It seems one can't avoid telling them the number.
Normally,
1. what is the proper reply to this? (If they persist in knowing the number?)
2.Why HR people need the current pay information? I thought the question should be raised only after on-site interview?
3.Is it a factor for the hiring manager to decide whether to have one-site interview? how will they inteprete the "current pay" information?
4. Big companies normally don't count every penny when they pay people, why they care about getting the current-pay information. To my understanding, for some companies , they want to know about this so they have the bargaining power over the candidate.
Thanks for any advice.
