In what source that you are judging people can't make 6 digit income? It is all about competitiveness of the company in relative to the market condition as well as cost of living. In the bay area, 6 digit income can't even make you to afford a house, what can the company do to keep its talented employees not moving somewhere else? Increase salary at a fair market rate that means even if paying people at an exaggerated rate than anywhere else. As for you, if you sell coffees at star bucks, you will make more than one thousand dollars a month, cashier in the Albertson’s makes around 20 bucks an hour, go figure. Oh, by the way, the average revenue generated by one single employee in S&P500 companies is around 460K, considering profit margin is around 40~50% (which is typical before operation margin), that means that one employee contributes around 200K profit to the company, so it is not rare some of them get paid 100K for their performance. Hi-Tech company even have higher profit margins, in the range of 60~70%. (Take XLNX or ALTR for example.)
