Well, let me say this way - I have worked and lived in different areas of US for many years. I heard a lot of negative sides of SCA as well as positive ones. After long staying in so many places, I determined to move to San Diego. Do I make decisions based on what I heard from other people? Hardly ever in my life. Am I stupid? People told me I'm not :)
Houses are more expensive than that in most areas in US, that's true. But do you know the property tax rate is low ~ 1.25% of your base price (the base price is adjustable but max annual increase limited to 2% by CA law)? In many other States, the property tax rate is about 3%; in some, the base price is inflated/adjusted per house market value slightly markdown - times by property rate, people paying much more than it appears. Overall the real cost of housing is not purely as what you heard...
Another big expensive thing is gasoline price - it's the highest in the nation. Why it's high? It's the CA law requiring refineries to use additives to reduce the toxic exhaust after burning. Who is beneficiary? We, the Californians driving on the road day by day. If I have choice between lower price w/o additives and higher price with additives, I would pick latter. Health is more important than the small amount we could save.
I'm not gonna describe how the weather is like and the services you can get with the equal money you spend here than else where. All in all, the longer I stay here the stronger feeling crawls on me that probably I made a lot bad decisions in my life except this one...
There are a lot of hearsay about S. CA, actually...
